  • A convincing dialogue between a senior supervisor in mechanical construction, and a young supervisor who is keen to learn about good safety leadership. Many characteristics are revealed in the field, during meetings with employees they meet as they move around or at their workstations, during a team meeting, and in frank exchanges where they debrief situations the young supervisor has previously observed or experienced.

Good communication is presented as the indispensable foundation for building a safety culture, as well as respect and listening to both needs and suggestions for improving safety in work situations.

The competencies related to safety leadership in this industry are similar to those in other sectors:

    - setting the example

    - taking time to build strong relationships

    - becoming a mentor-coach for everyone who needs support

    - knowing how to motivate others and showing you are capable of learning from your staff

    - taking great care of your staff

    - learning to manage different personality types in work situations

Finally, showing that you are strongly committed to your job and that ensuring the safety of your staff is your top priority.
