While the traditional role of a manager is to manage, to plan activities, it can also include a willingness to influence, guide or direct their colleagues. This is what distinguishes a leader from a manager. It is fundamental to safety improvements, as collective mobilization goes hand-in-hand with managerial leadership, understood as the ability to influence behaviour so that it becomes safer.
This "Cahier de la sécurité industrielle" sets out 7 general principles of leadership: 1/ Create a safety vision; 2/ Give safety its rightful place in the organisation and management and oversee it on a daily basis; 3/ Share the safety vision; 4/Be credible: provide a coherent example; 5/ Promote team spirit and horizontal cooperation; 6/ Be available on site; 7/ Acknowledge good practice and apply fair sanctions.
It then presents 6 chapters summarising debates held on the theme and testimonies, by key players: plant directors, construction managers, maintenance shut-down managers, HSE actors, team leaders, secretaries or members of the Health and Safety Committee.
Objectives
To determine the 7 principles of leadership.
To identify the drivers for action.
